India for the first time hosted this prestigious FIBA-Asia womens basketball championship featuring top teams as China, Korea and Japan. Scheduled from September 17 to 24 at the JN Indoor Stadium, Chennai, the competition also determined the three qualifiers from Asia for the next World Championship in 2010.

In order to balance the level of competitions, the FIBA Asia Championship for Women is played in two levels: Level I and Level II.The teams will form one (1) group. Each team will play all the other teams in the group in one (1) Preliminary Round.
The four best-placed teams in this round will qualify into the Final Round.

At the end of the Preliminary Round the 5th & 6th placed teams in Level I
and the 1st & 2nd placed team in Level II will play decisive games for qualification to Level I of the next FIBA ASIA Women

India lost all of their Level 1 Group matches and the closes they had come to a victory was against Thailand.  The play - off match with Level 2 winners Malaysia saw India up their tempo and won convincingly to stay up in Level 1 !


Level 1 : China , Korea , Japan , Chinese taipei , Thailand , India

Level 2 : Malaysia , Lebonan , Kazakistan , Philipines , Uzbekistan , Sri Lanka

Level 1 Match 4 : Thailand 78 - 67 India
